The Castle at Palmyra,Qala'at ibn Maan, was built in the 17th century by a Lebanese warlord to control the Syrian desert. It is very likely that there was some sort of fort here well before then. The castle is surrounded by a moat cut from solid rock which is crossed by a footbridge.
