Hanksville Badlands

There are a lot of Bentonite hills in this area. Bentonite is volcanic ash from the Jurassic times and looks like hills covered in popcorn in shades of brown, red, purple, and even green. Hanksville has a lot of these areas and they are some times referred to as the Badlands. Bentonite when wet is very slippery and will make driving in the area inpossible after rain. We had some rain along with snow, sleet, thunderstorms, and hail. All good for photography except the couple days of 40 MPH wind but not good for getting back on the 4WD trails. The rain kept us out of the badlands and off the trail to the Mars station.
