End of the Road
Ruins of old mines and mining town are everywhere in these mountains, within 10 miles or so there were several large mining town with large mills and populations of thousands. Many can be reached by 4WD but some were only accessed only buy narrow mule paths or by trams that carried men up in ore buckets. A few miles from camp there were mines and a town by Silver Lake, a large lake at over 12,000 ft. The last time I hiked there many large building were still standing. From the mill just outside of town the tram lines with the tram buckets still on them still go up the mountain. The only way up now is to hike, at times on a narrow ledge which still has snow on it even later in the summer.
