Red mountain at First Light

Como Lake

Red Mountain at First Light

Went up California Gulch from and had this view of Lake Como when we reached it about noon. The next day went up over Hurricane peak to the lake hoping the sunrise would be great at the peak as usually it is calm and the lake make a great photo subject but it was windy, and cold, heading back down the early morning sun was really bringing out the colors on red mountain

Three more views of Lake Como

Yes, I really like this spot. From here you can reach several great trails such as Corkscrew, California Gulch, Engineers, Cinnamon, Picayne, Placer Gulch, Eureka Gulch, and several others. The trail you see on the far side of the lake is Poughkeepsie Gulch which the guide book says a winch is necessary and to  "expect severe vehicle damage".

Lake Como

Lake Como sits at the convergence of three trails: Hurricane Pass, California Pass, and Poughkeepsie Pass in one of the most scenic areas of the San Juan Mountains. Its been years since I have been on Poughkeepsie Pass Trail it is reported to still be closed by snow. The guide book says that a winch is necessary to make it now. Even worse, it says to "expect severe vehicle damage". Not having a winch may be a good excuse to avoid it this year.
